My now 8 year old and I are new to Frederick. 2 years ago we moved out here with no family, just faith.
If you never started over, you don't know how challenging it is, especially when you have a young child. By the grace of God, I found a job that provides and someone in passing mentioned I Believe in Me for my son to attend.
Last August, I brought my son to the activity center for an open house on a whim. We were both pretty nervous. When we saw everyone's smiling faces welcoming us at the door and then saw that there was a basketball court, it initially sealed the deal. lol
I remember speaking in depth to Mama Kelly, Mr. Dayvon & Mr. Aje in depth about my concerns raising my son, and what I wanted from an after care program/community support. They seemed to understand and more importantly empathize.
When I was finished talking with the mentors, I nearly had to pick my son up and throw him over my shoulder because he was so excited and hopeful to make new friends and have people who look like him in his corner. And I drove home crying tears of joy. Every parent everywhere just wants to feel as though they are leaving their child in the hands of adults who care about their well being and their futures.
Aje and his mentors blew my expectations of an after care program out of the water. THEY CARE for the children they are supporting. I feel it, I've seen it and I know it in my heart.
My son has grown up so much emotionally since he's been attending I Believe In Me the past year. He uses his manners consistently, he is more agreeable to helping out at home, he's made friendships and he expressed that he feels supported.
Another great thing about IBM is that it is not just a daycare program- staff come alongside parents at parent teacher conferences and individual sporting events, they have the children and parents engage in community service, we occasionally get together on the weekends and hike, participate in park clean ups and just celebrate life with each other.
I'm grateful for IBM and its mentors. (You can leave this out if too personal- but I'm behind Aje in whatever healing journey he needs to bounce back, we all fall short.) I'm behind the mission statement of the program and what it stands for 100%. My son has grown too much in the right direction for me to say otherwise. IBM, the mentors and their support has been an answered prayer.
